TALKING/WRITING POINTS

1. I’m really concerned about climate change.

2. Pollution and ecology do not recognize political borders. The issue is global and scope, and it will require domestic legislation and international coordination to effectively combat it. We have only a small window of opportunity left before it comes irreversible.

3. Our best shot for such action comes with the COP15 UN climate talks this December in Copenhagen.

4. The rest of the world looks to the US for leadership; yet US diplomats cannot negotiate effectively at Copenhagen unless Congress has passed a climate bill into law before COP15.

5. Support bold legislation in the Kerry-Boxer bill being debated in Senate, and urge that you pass it before the UN converges in Copenhagen this December.

Background information:

1. Current negotiations ask for the UN to agree that the world should not warm by more than 2°C, with greenhouse gases not going above 450ppm (parts per million).

2. But this isn’t enough to avoid “dangerous climate change” — up-to-date science suggests that 350ppm and 1.5°C are much safer levels to reach. A 4 degree rise in the next 50 years is possible, and this would lead to climate and human catastrophe.

3. Norway has pledged to reduce its emissions by 40% by 2020 on 1990 levels—a target more consistent with 350ppm and 1.5°C than anything else a Western country has proposed. If Norway can do it, so can the US–after all, the rest of the world looks to us for leadership!

4. The Copenhagen summit in December could save the world, or condemn it. The time for action is now!
