This is my official statement on this matter, please take a look and forward the information to everyone!
I was recently accepted to take part in the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, 15th Conference of the Parties in Copenhagen, Denmark, from December 7-18, 2009. As an “Agent of Change,” through an organization called SustainUS (www.sustainus.org), I will be part of a 30-person team of dedicated youth. We will develop policy recommendations, collaborate with international youth climate activists, and work tirelessly to ensure that a global climate deal is bold, just, and equitable, and ensures the survival of all peoples. Together, the delegation will contribute an estimated 2,200 hours of volunteer service!
The only non-profit program of its kind in the country, the SustainUS Agents of Change program has successfully increased youth stakeholder involvement at the United Nations for the past eight years. As an accredited non-governmental organization, SustainUS will effectively engage government policymakers at the international level. At this year’s negotiations, governments will be deciding on specific emission reduction targets, adaptation methods, mitigation opportunities, and ways to reduce global deforestation.
Till Copenhagen, my role is to increase local awareness and involvement in Cincinnati through the media, lobbying our elected officials, and involvement in local movements (for instance, I spoke at Cincinnati’s 350 Day of Action and Power Shift Ohio). I am also working to develop a SustainUS policy position regarding carbon emissions.
By now you may have guessed that traveling to Copenhagen is expensive. I am expected to fundraise my way there, and am aiming to raise $2000 to cover my expenses.
Here is a breakdown of my expenses:
Airfare: $800
15 nights at hostel: $600
3 meals for 15 days:$500
Cell phone: $50
Other expenses: ~$100
Total: ~$2050
SO FAR I HAVE ONLY GATHERED ABOUT HALF OF THIS!
I hope you will be willing to support my work on this crucial issue, and contribute a tax-deductible donation to fund my travel. I greatly appreciate any amount at all that you are able to contribute. Our success truly depends on your generosity!
Thank you so much!
